Forgings

Forging is a process by which the selected material is given a desired shape by plastic deformation or the use of a suitable compressive force. The forging process creates a refined grain structure and can improve the physical properties of the material being forged. A well designed part can orientate the grain structure of the material in the direction of the main stresses during the actual use of the part.

Global Castings Resources offers 4 different forging processes. They are impression closed die forgings/precision forgings, seamless rolled ring forgings, open die forgings / hand forgings and cold forging / heading.

Closed die forgings can produce an almost limitless variety of three dimensional shapes. They can range in weight from a few ounces to several hundreds of pounds. Part geometries can range from spherical shapes, rectangular shapes or disc-like shapes. They also can be thin long sections with ribs and bosses. Forgings can incorporate many different design elements such as protrusions, holes, cavities and pockets. They can be bent or curvedĀ  into different planes.

The forgings are available in carbon and alloy steels as well as stainless steels.

Rolled ring forging is commonly performed by punching a hole into a round piece of base material creating a donut shape. The donut shape is then rolled, squeezed or pounded into the desired shape. These forgings can range from several ounces to several thousands of pounds. The maximum ring diameter we are able to produce is 3000 mm and the maximum pie diameter is 1500 mm. We can also customize the section shape.

These forgings are available carbon and alloy steel as well as stainless steels.

Open die forging is performed by progressively working the starting stock material between usually flat faced dies. This process does not confine the material laterally. In practice this process comprises many process variations which can produce a wide range of shapes and sizes. This process is especially suited to produce optimum structural integrity for huge metal components. GCR can provide open die forgings from a few pounds up to 30 metric tons.

These forgings are available in carbon and alloy steel, stainless steels and aluminum alloys.

Cold forging / heading encompasses many different processes. The temperature of the materials being formed range from room temperature to a few hundred degrees. The processes include bending, cold drawing, cold heading, coining, extrusion, punching, thread rolling and others. Typically parts are in the range of 10 pounds or less and symmetrical parts readily lend themselves to automated processing.

These types of parts are available in carbon steels, lower alloy steels and stainless steels.

A variety of secondary operations can be performed on all of these types of forgings. They include heat treatment, machining, plating, painting, assembly services and even custom packing.
